How did you get your start at NYSERDA?
I was a graduate student at SUNY Albany’s Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy and through an internship came to NYSERDA in March 2009. I became a full-time employee in October 2009 working in Energy Analysis. Energy Analysis was a good fit due to my background in public administration. I received my undergraduate degree in Policy Analysis and Management from Cornell University and had also interned with the Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, DC. I was interested in being an analyst in Public Policy.
What are your primary work duties?
Among my primary responsibilities is the Patterns and Trends report, published annually highlighting energy trends in New York State. It is a comprehensive publication with 15 years of energy statistics and data on energy consumption, supply sources and, price and expenditure information for New York State. Additionally, I provide analysis for heating oil and propane market matters and the petroleum fuels industry. And, I have the responsibility of being part of NYSERDA’s lead response team for the Office of Emergency Management in the event of an emergency activation, and am responsible for organizing NYSERDA’s initial response coverage.
What has been the most challenging or exciting project you have been involved with?
Working during Superstorm Sandy; staffing the NYSERDA desk at the Office of Emergency Management. I was assisting with assessing the petroleum supply situation during the storm and the effects on the industry. Being a part of the emergency management team responding to this type of disaster was a very difficult yet rewarding challenge.
What do you think you will be doing in five years?
I am thankful to have a stable, successful life and a loving partner. I’ve purchased a home and my first new car. In the next five years I hope to expand my career opportunities and continue to meet energy industry executives. Of course, I want to learn more about energy and petroleum to advance the goals of NYSERDA.
What is the one thing you would like to tell about yourself?
There are a few things:
I am a die-hard Yankee fan.
I love to travel and just returned from a trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
What were the best vacations you have taken?
The most fun I had on vacation was in Costa Rico where I spent two weeks travelling to remote locations around the country. In addition, Hawaii was fantastic, especially for the snorkeling and sunsets, and was a graduation gift from my parents. During my recent trip to Puerto Vallarta, I was able to swim with dolphins, jump off a cliff and zip- line upside down.
What would you say to someone considering applying for a position at NYSERDA?
NYSERDA is a wonderfully dynamic organization with a mission that is committed to the public service of advancing energy solutions to all New Yorkers. The people at NYSERDA really make the difference and provide a professional, friendly and collegial work environment. I have garnered tremendous experience and knowledge being part of the NYSERDA family providing technical, analytical, and quantitative analysis of petroleum and other energy industries in New York State.
